Discipleship is a two-step process: (1) being transformed as a disciple, and (2) working so that others will be transformed as disciples.
Discipleship, in other words, is the process of learning to follow and become more like Jesus Christ and helping others to do the same. It's not just about acquiring knowledge about Jesus, but also about imitating his life, practicing his teachings, and sharing his message. Essentially, it's about a transformative journey of growing in faith and helping others do the same. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Here's a more detailed look:
- Following Jesus:Discipleship begins with a commitment to follow Jesus, learning from him and striving to live according to his teachings. [1, 6]
- Becoming Like Jesus:It involves an intentional effort to imitate Jesus's character, love, and actions. [3, 5]
- Making Disciples:Discipleship also includes actively helping others grow in their faith and become followers of Christ. [1, 3]
- Relational:Discipleship is often facilitated through intentional relationships with mentors or peers who guide and support one another. [7, 8]
- Transformative:The goal of discipleship is not simply to acquire information, but to experience a fundamental transformation in one's worldview and way of life. [4, 5]
- Ongoing Process:Discipleship is a lifelong journey of learning, growth, and service. [1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11]
