Christ as Prophet
In the Reformed tradition, Christ’s role as Prophet is part of His threefold office (along with Priest and King) as the ultimate mediator between God and humanity. He is the chief Prophet because He perfectly reveals God's will, cures human ignorance, and embodies the Word of God. [1, 2, 3, 4]
The Remedy for Ignorance
- The Triple Cure: Reformed theologians like Francis Turretin view the three offices as a direct remedy for the triple damage of sin. The prophetic office cures human ignorance by scattering the darkness of error with divine light. [1]
- Revealing God’s Will: As stated in the Heidelberg Catechism (Lord's Day 12) and the Westminster Shorter Catechism, Jesus is our chief Prophet because He has fully revealed the secret counsel and will of God concerning our redemption. [1, 2]
More Than a Messenger
- The Living Word: Unlike Old Testament prophets who merely spoke messages from God, Christ is the eternal Word of God incarnate. He does not just point to the truth; He states, "I am the truth." [1, 2, 3]
- The Ultimate Spokesman: According to the opening of Hebrews, God spoke to humanity through the prophets in past times, but in these last days, He has spoken definitively through His Son. [1, 2]
Continuation Through Word and Spirit
- Internal Illumination: A prophet does not only provide objective data; Christ applies the truth internally. He enlightens the human mind and effectually calls believers through the joint work of His spoken/written Word and the Holy Spirit. [1, 2, 3]
- Apostolic Authority: Christ continues His prophetic ministry today. He spoke through the Apostles to complete the New Testament canon and continues to speak whenever the true Word of God is faithfully preached in the church. [1, 2, 3, 4]
