The Preeminence of Missional Discipleship

The Preeminence of Missional Discipleship

Missional discipleship is the foundational framework where following Jesus (formation) and advancing His redemptive work (mission) are permanently intertwined. It holds "preeminence" because it rejects the idea that faith is a private, inward-focused activity, instead calling believers to actively renew culture and serve the marginalized wherever they live. [1, 2, 3]

Why Missional Discipleship is Preeminent

  • Inseparability of Mission and Formation: The historic Great Commission commands believers to make disciples. True transformation in Christ—internal holiness and spiritual discipline—is fundamentally designed to equip people to join in God’s redemptive purposes in the world.
  • Rejection of Sacred-Secular Dualism: It eliminates the idea that ministry only happens within a church building. Every profession, neighborhood, and relationship is viewed as a mission field where the peace, justice, and love of God are actively demonstrated.
  • Life-on-Life Multiplication: It moves away from passive, lecture-style teaching toward hands-on, relational mentoring. Disciples are trained not just to consume information, but to embody the character of Christ and disciple others to do the same. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Core Pillars of a Missional Lifestyle

  • Counter-Formation: Deliberately unlearning the destructive or isolating patterns of the secular world and retraining one's mindset to operate like Jesus.
  • Tangible Presence: Seeking God through active worship and communal prayer to remain continuously dependent on the Holy Spirit rather than human strategy.
  • Holistic Engagement: Sacrificially serving the poor, championing justice, and stewarding creation. [1, 2, 3, 4]
